Ethnographic Podcast: Dixie’s Grave
My Senior Thesis Project
Like any Southern family, mine loves to tell stories. We inherit the stories of our parents, grandparents, and ancestors and take them up as our own. These oral histories are told again and again until heritage becomes personal memory; we accept these legacies and strive to live beyond them. For this podcast, I set out to record the stories of our family graveyard. In this place, our lineage is recited like the bible, gravesites are claimed, mothers summon daughters, and civil war re-enactors get very fire and brimstone. This is my first full-length podcast, I consider this project a beginning rather than an end, there are many stories I wanted to tell but just didn’t have time to edit. I decided to create a conversation between my mother and her sisters, with sonic elements that will bring you right down to Alabama. So, welcome, pour yourself a glass of sweet tea and sit down at my family’s table.
Zines
What is a zine?
A zine (/ziːn/ ZEEN; short for magazine or fanzine) is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.
